The Drivers Ed Game on AddictingGames.com is actually a pretty addicting game. I started messing around with it, under the initial impression that a drivers ed game could not possibly be entertaining and would probably just bring back haunting memories of my own experience learning to drive. In fact, through the first three levels I fully expected my dad to pop out of the game screaming at me for scratching up his brand new Subaru Forester with my horrible parallel parking ability. I was pleasantly surprised, however, with the interface, realistic graphics, and challenging skill levels.
Now, don’t get me wrong, this is no perfect driving simulator – it’s a free browser-based flash game for a reason – but it plays really well for what it is designed to be. The angles and challenges are surprisingly realistic and challenging. With each new level I advanced to, I would anticipate an easy solution and quickly attempt to park my vehicle. Without fail, I would bump into a neighboring vehicle and be forced to exert some effort into getting the angles and geometry correct before simply fitting into each new parking space. From an educational perspective, this kind of challenge is a healthy standard to set for new generations of drivers.
One of the greatest benefits of the Drivers Ed Game is the conceptual value for young drivers. Parallel parking is a great challenge for many new drivers, and the ability to see it modeled out in front of your eyes can be very helpful. I had one of my younger friends try the game out, and his eyes were opened to the importance of maneuvering into the proper position as you begin a parallel parking attempt. So many concepts that have been merely vocalized in the past can now be quickly visualized, a huge educational benefit.
